Thanks to the Bard and that anonymous doctor, and to my dear radio friend George, I no longer feel alone. Remembering my dream is a sure sign I’ve been catching my zzz’s. I take great comfort in other people’s problems, both past and present. Unlike Shakespeare, my motto is “to dream, perchance to sleep.” I wonder if he suffered from insomnia so many years ago. It doesn’t always work, and sometimes I’m not sure if I actually slept until I remember my dream. I sometimes feel myself getting sleepy and on a few occasions, I’ve actually slept for six hours straight! I drink a glass and take two melatonin gummies before I go to bed. He recommended tart cherry juice, which I was able to find at the local Acme. I do believe it was a real physician and not an actor plugging over-the-counter sleeping pills. Lastly, I’ve tried a new trick I saw a “doctor” pitch on television. George is my last resort, and I have a sleepy crush on him. I usually turn it on after trying meditation, stretching and other tactics for insomnia. When it’s dark, I’m happy to stay in bed, hoping to doze off. I do enjoy listening, but don’t want to participate. Sometimes he lulls me to sleep with his variety of guests speaking on paranormal, scientific and medical topics. If you’re not a night owl, you can listen to an app during the day. He’s a most likable and knowledgeable man as well as the most popular host during those hours. It’s fascinating how many people call in the wee hours: truck drivers, night workers and insomniacs like me. There is a radio next to my bed, and I’m an avid listener of a program called “Coast to Coast.” It is syndicated all over the country, and I pick it up on Atlantic City station WOMB. Daily exercise every day is usually helpful, but sometimes long walks don’t do the trick. I also try to keep a routine time for bed every night, which seems to help. Other times, I try to eat peanut butter or, as my doctor says, good fat food like a Mediterranean diet. I save the pill for special occasions when I need to be extra alert like driving on Long Beach Island during the tourist season. I do have a magic pill that gives me four hours of snoring, but on doctor’s orders, I can’t take it every night. I’ve tried all the over-the-counter remedies, and they just don’t work for me. It cheers me to hear “I didn’t sleep a wink last night.” I know I’m not alone when someone complains. I’m not good at keeping secrets, and it makes me feel better to commiserate with people who suffer the same problems. I promised myself when I was young that I would not talk about all this stuff when I got old. They all have aching backs and arthritis and they can’t sleep and we do go on and on. When I bring it up to friends and neighbors, they chime in with their problems. I know this is true only because I Googled it. report symptoms of insomnia in a given year. Do I get up for some herbal tea or listen to the radio or ticking clock? Sometimes I’m lucky enough to go back to sleep after counting the proverbial sheep. Some nights it works and I’ll nod off until the bewitching hour of 2 or 3 a.m. I sniff some lavender soap and tuck myself in with a good book and hope to feel sleepy. Shakespeare said it first, “‘to sleep perchance to dream.” It’s such a simple request that I repeat at night with a bit of trepidation. ![]()
